Festival Cubana

Last week I was thrilled to attend a concert produced by Nino Perez at the Fox Theater in Spokane; Festival de Musica Cubana. The sounds of the Buena Vista Social Club performed by Kiki Valera and his band were outstanding!

The crowd was on the smaller side but boy, did they make up for it with their energy! By the end of the night, the enthusiasm in the room was so infectious that I found myself dancing in the aisles with everyone! I started the night seated in the more modest section for the first part of the show, but by the time the second half was on I found myself front and center!

I also made several connections throughout the evening. I met Kiki Valera and his wife (who was running their merch table). We got along great! They were also very interested in our Wataino CD project. Mrs. Valera even gave me one of their CDs at cost!

I also had a chance to meet Nino Perez, and we hit it off like old friends. He even invited me to travel to Cuba with him and explore the musical possibilities on the island.

I also was introduced to Corazon of KYRS who has a show called Latin Lounge. We explored the possibility of going on air with her to promote the Wataino CD once it is finished.

I also happened to meet Christie Mayor and her husband. It just so happens that she is great friends with my cousin Marsha, who taught her granddaughter’s 6th grade class in Colville. It was a very pleasant conversation, and yet another reminder of what a small world we live in.

All told, it was a vibrant night of dancing, music, opportunities, and new friends. What more could a guy ask for?
